Every ClimateWells project is independently verified and registered to ensure a real and tangible impact.

To calculate our projects’ emission reductions, we use the Oil Climate Index (OCI+), an oil and gas emissions quantification tool developed by the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit.

For more details, you can read about the methodology on the International Carbon Registry and Open Carbon Protocol.

Our mission

ClimateWells is focused on making the largest impact on emissions as quickly as possible. Methane is up to 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide over the next twenty years and is considered the most urgent threat to the climate goals.

We develop and implement high-integrity projects that permanently prevent methane and other harmful gases from entering the atmosphere. By closing wells, removing outdated infrastructure, and restoring land and water resources, we turn neglected energy sites into verified climate assets. Our work delivers measurable emission reductions, creates local jobs, supports healthier communities, and creates new opportunities for community reuse, agriculture, and renewable energy development.

About us

The beginnings of ClimateWells took shape when co-founders Reid Calhoon and Charlie Wohleber recognized a gap in the energy transition. Both had spent years in the oil and gas data space, building RunTitle, a company that brought transparency to mineral ownership across the United States. That work exposed a hidden problem: hundreds of thousands of aging wells quietly leaking methane long after production stopped.

After RunTitle, they began exploring how the same data and technology could be used to locate and permanently seal these wells. Their work with the Rocky Mountain Institute helped develop one of the first methodologies to quantify the climate benefits of plugging methane-emitting wells.

In 2022, they launched ClimateWells to turn that idea into action. Today, the company partners with operators, governments, and communities to plug wells, restore land, and generate high-integrity carbon credits that make the next project possible.

Our beginnings

The ClimateWells team has over 20 years of experience in energy transition systems, oilfield data and impact investing.

The beginnings of ClimateWells took shape when co-founders Reid Calhoon and Charlie Wohleber recognized a gap in the energy transition. There was a concerted effort to develop new, renewable energy sources but a very limited focus on how to handle legacy energy infrastructure.

Specifically, over half of all oil and gas wells are decades old, creating as much as 70% of oilfield methane emissions but less than 5% of production. In 2021, we began working with the Rocky Mountain Institute to help develop one of the first methodologies to quantify the climate benefits of plugging methane-emitting wells.

In 2022, we launched ClimateWells to turn that methodology into action. Today, the company partners with landowners, school districts, operators, and tribal communities to plug wells earlier, restoring land, and generating high-integrity carbon credits that make the next project possible.
